My Favourite Breakout- Building student agency in an MLE Breakout Ulearn15

Presented by Simon Ashby and Scott Mackenzie - Leap into the now  was an engaging tour of one school's journey to student agency in an MLE.  They believe that the greatest sign of successful teacher is children working as if the teacher doesn’t exist. See vimeo from their slides.  A good tip was having a sign saying - don’t distract me, I’m in learning beside the students who need quiet to concentrate on their work. (Or if they need to be told to work somewhere and take a sign to complete the work) They spoke about students being compliant vs wanting to do it.  They ask over and over- Why are you doing this? What are you doing? and expect the students to relate their learning back to the curriculum. So what are you going to do? What will it look like? In the slide show there is a good video about who is leading change in schools and who to out your focus on if you want to see change happen.  Students are made completely accountable for their learning by presenti...

Questioning: Becoming Question Askers - Trevor Bond Breakout Ulearn15

http://tinyurl.com/ulearn15 Give students a senario-  What are your questions? What do you need to know? Are they effective questions?  Provide stimuli for the students- two jars, one has an egg at the bottom of the jar, one with the egg in the middle of the jar with a big black question in between them.  Question wall- record in voice app in iPad, tidy the questions, hone in on them.  Space or environment to ask questions in context where they can find the answers. Don’t tell them how to ask their question. Fill children with needs and problems - not a picture to ask questions about. How did you get to that question? Where did it come from? So you’ve asked a question… cool, how does that fit into our learning? Relevant questions and wonderings wall. Take the questions to the best source- have enough process to support the students to find out the answers.  Google search phrases using ‘’ around key words and phrases Trevor Bond- questioning waka Progression sta...

Re-designing the boundaries of learning - Grant Lichtman Breakout Ulearn15

This was a very interactive session. I recorded some notes however enjoyed going through a process to consider how I could approach changing something. Use a lot of post it notes to help problem solve. Record all of the ideas.  Think- about you in your life that you learnt something so deeply that it was a peak learning exp.  share that story in 30 seconds Listener to Record the conditions that allowed that to happen.  Post up What if....? Exercise for staff.  Allow staff to ask questions about Māori in our school.  Stanford d school have page for teachers.

Learning is about how you connect to people. Learning is happening in the community.  Write, write, write - get feedback from writing from your peers.  Colleagues as valuable contributers. Creating forum for teacher dialogue.  Sharing leadership.  Teach people stuff that you are doing- practice to improve teaching practice by teaching your best lesson to someone else. It was okay to ask questions and to not know everything.  Learn how to handle conflict- it is inevitable but it doesn't have to be distructive.  Get comfortable with discomfort.

The lessons we should be teaching, but don't... Nicki Urlich Breakout Ulearn15

What we will cover: by Nicki Urlich Google is the best invention ever. Knowledge in your pocket- growing the knowledge we have.  We are teaching learning to learn, skills, dispositions, thinking skills and processes.  Children need knowledge fast and they need to know how to get it.  Google it! Race to search google.  We can use safe search kids and having a safety button that you see online or you think you see something online or something you think mum wouldn't like you to see then walk away or shut it down.  Have a buddy class, an expert and a teacher table to model searching to your children.  V for victory- for any new learning job, problem solving, facing new issues.  Best way of doing an Internet search?  Teaching skimming and scanning. Print off google page asking kids to search for key words.  Evaluating- yes getting the information from search or no I'm not.  1. Write a question for Google.  Skim and scan.  Evaluate....

Agency and ownership: Why then how? Steve Mouldey Breakout Ulearn15

Image
I began this breakout part way through as the breakout I choose I feel was aimed more at leadership. I was looking for designing the learning environment and she spoke about a very broad 'learning environment.' So I went to see Steve Mouldey as he was asking, 'What's the silliest question you could ask?'  Inquiry learning design model Moving from Teacher Controlled to Student Choice. Teacher choosing the topic, children choose what part of it. Eg topic is desert- can choose which desert. Choice of how they present and the teacher can challenge why they make the choices. Move beyond choices to student voice.  Teachers come up with the ideas, sit with students to come up with their ideas and offer the learning then.  What do you most need to teach- core. Enables you to sit down and co design with the students. Build trust with students. Trust builds by following through with their ideas. Key aspect to be able to sit down with students and break it down onto a post...

5 + a day the e-learning way - Breakout Ulearn15

Image
I was expecting more than what I got from this breakout . I was hoping for a wealth of knowledge about integrating e-learning and the Daily Five. The breakout covered what the Daily Five is etc and in my opinion spent too much time on this part. I found a few good ideas like creating charts to show the students what e-learning tools and programmes they can use to support each part of the Daily Five. From this idea I adapted it to make it suit my learners. I know my class use the blog and struggle their way around the side links. I have been meaning to set up a thing where they can click on the blog and it will speak to them. I still haven't done this but I had an idea in the meantime. I can create separate pages on my class blog for each part of the Daily Five and have pictures and links to the Daily Five activity. I started with Read to self as seen below:

Grant Lichtman - Keynote Ulearn 15

The things that struck a chord with me while I listened to Grant Lichtman talk was that students don't need basic knowledge. If they are taught skills like our NZC Principles and the Key Competencies they can find out all they need to fill their knowledge. Grant went on a 12 week tour of the USA asking teachers: Show me what you're excited about? What does innovation mean to you? Tell me about the obstacles? Tell me about successes...  He was asking the students: What do you think about when you come to this place?  End of the day- one word to describe their day? These questions are food for thought for me and I have been thinking about asking my learners the student questions. It made me think about whether my current class have much input into creating their learning environment and learning programme.  Grant went on to say we lead from where we are. Moving from the the idea of a teacher as a guide on the side to a teacher as farmer. We create a fence and some boundary...
