My Favourite Breakout- Building student agency in an MLE Breakout Ulearn15

Presented by Simon Ashby and Scott Mackenzie - Leap into the now was an engaging tour of one school's journey to student agency in an MLE.
They believe that the greatest sign of successful teacher is children working as if the teacher doesn’t exist.

See vimeo from their slides.

A good tip was having a sign saying - don’t distract me, I’m in learning beside the students who need quiet to concentrate on their work. (Or if they need to be told to work somewhere and take a sign to complete the work)

They spoke about students being compliant vs wanting to do it.

They ask over and over- Why are you doing this? What are you doing? and expect the students to relate their learning back to the curriculum. So what are you going to do? What will it look like?

In the slide show there is a good video about who is leading change in schools and who to out your focus on if you want to see change happen.

Students are made completely accountable for their learning by presenting their learning to the class at least weekly. They choose their form of presentation and go with it. If they have nothing to present they still have to present it as this builds their motivation for them to not be left with nothing to present.

Their students are fantastic at articulating their learning- what learning has occurred in this

Who are you going to impact? They celebrate sharing projects from genius hour.

Handing them the NZC learning progressions- for example, here are the art progressions how are you going to achieve it?

They revisit the key competencies daily.

I am excited and motivated to try some new things with my learners and found a lot of value in their presentation. I would like to discuss further how they think it would look in the junior school.
