Letting the learner lead

At GAFE this year they talked about asking the students to think of a problem and come up with a solution. I have been pondering how this can look in my classroom. I thought about a whole class slot of time to allow them to work on a project, then I thought about giving them the problem, and I also thought about how it could work with what things are already happening in the class. Korero

Interesting conversation starter around Māori and Māori achievement. Karakia a new one that Anaru introduced to us. Attempting to make connections via a version of a pepeha. Laid photos of ways to get to New Zealand- Ocean liner, tall ship, waka, aeroplane asked participants to take a stone and place it on a picture telling us a story of an ancestor. When parents are dropping their tamariki in to school as a 5 year old, they usually need to leave their culture behind to be in the school. They ask themselves- Can you see yourself in the school? Do you have the feeling of belonging. Link to  Māori land  ownership post. Interesting to watch. Hautū review.
