Counting on

Image
Move on- it is not a bigger and don't stay here long. Ignore traditional method of counting on. Getting the kids to count and stop the count then start again. Don't start with a little number. Start with a reason- money. Tell the students you have $21 and they have to trust the count and add 3 coins in. Then repeat the count. Keep going with the same story so you can keep the learning on the counting on. Go around the group then let them have the chance to have another go to model to others who may not be as confident.  Practise crossing the decade, 29, 30 36 and 3, 36, 37, 38- the std need to say the previous number before beginning counting. Get children to tell the hand how much you have- tells their fist before they count on the 37, 38, 39.  Double count- give students the same number to add but they have 5 counters in front of them.

Ten and

Tell stories forwards, backwards and sideways. I have $10 in this pocket and $6 in this pocket. How much money do I have? I have $6 in this pocket and $10 in this pocket. How much money do I have? I have got $14 but I went to the shop and spent $4. How much do I have left? Doubles- 5 and 5 is 10 and 1 and 1 is 2 so 10+2 is 12. 8 and 8- 5 and 5 is 10 and 3 and 3 is 6 so 10 and 6 is 16. Tell stories- My copycat friend and I went fishing and I caught 7 fish. How many did my friend get? Helping students see connections between the knowledge they have can be extended. Extend their range of doubles to go to 20 by using ten and, and the doubles they already know.
