Proximity praise

Last year at our Incredible Years course we learnt about proximity praise. I have found this to be very effective for the majority of my class this year. I find the students respond quickly and positively. It also means I don't feel grumpy or naggy because I am noticing the children who are on task too. So what is it and how does it work?

Proximity praise - Wherever possible, correct unwanted behaviours by praising those nearby who are doing the right thing, rather than focussing on and telling off children who are not complying.

I urge you to give it a go and see how it supports your classroom climate.
